Andrea Bertolini

Andrea Bertolini is Associate Professor of Private Law at the at the Dirpolis Institute, Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, and adjunct professor in private law at the University of Pisa.
He is the director and scientific coordinator of the European Centre of Excellence on the Regulation of Robotics and AI (EURA, www.eura.satannapisa.it ), whose purpose is to promote innovative multidisciplinary research, offer advanced educational programs, and foster the dialogue with policy makers, increasing social awareness and promoting an informed debate on technology regulation, robotics and AI primarily.
Dr. Bertolini teaches both undergraduate and graduate (master and doctoral, Ph.D.) level courses on private and comparative law, and law and ethics of robotics and AI, and supervises graduate students and Ph.d. candidates on such matters.
His published research (books, and papers published on international and national journals) ranges from private law (contracts, torts, law of obligations) to regulation of robotics and AI and technoethics, with a comparative and law and economics approach, and a focus on alternative liability models, product safety regulation and certification, insurance and risk management.
Since 2015 he works, either as coordinator or WP leader, in many national and European projects and consults national, International (including the OECD and World Economic Forum), and European policy makers both with written studies and in person hearings, on a regular basis on issues of technology regulation.
Prof. Bertolini holds a jointed degree from the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna and the University of Pisa, a Ph.D in private law from the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, as well as a LL.M. from Yale Law School. He is an attorney licensed to practice in Italy and New York. Since 2024 he serves on the Board of the Italian Institute for Artificial Intelligence for Industry, funded by the Italian government to ease technology transfer.
